WHAT
ARE COMMON SIGNS OF ALLERGY?
Allergy
symptoms come in many forms. These include hives, rashes, itching,
eye irritation, wheezing, hearing loss and shortness of breath. However,
the most common symptoms involve the nose and include nasal congestion,
sneezing, nasal discharge and coughing These latter symptoms are characteristic
of "allergic rhinitis", defined as an inflammation of the
nasal mucosa (lining of the nose) caused by an allergic reaction.
WHO
GETS ALLERGIC RHINITIS?
Although
this condition may begin when you are an adult, the majority of cases
start during childhood and adolescence. 10% of children and up to
30% of adolescents have allergic rhinitis. It has been estimated that
as many as 40% of the entire population may be affected.
Heredity
plays an important role in the occurrence of allergies, primarily
by the inheritance of an increased capacity to become sensitized following
exposure to an allergen.
In
children and adolescents, it has been estimated that allergic rhinitis
is responsible for the loss of 1,500,000 school days per year. In adults,
it is one of the leading causes of absenteeism and inefficient work
performance. In all age groups, it is among the three most expensive
health problems in terms of medications and doctor fees.
WHAT
CAUSES ALLERGIC RHINITIS?
Seasonal
allergic rhinitis is primarily due to sensitivity to mold spores and
pollens, causing symptoms only during the pollinating season.
Perennial
allergic rhinitis is more common, occurring variably throughout the
year. Major allergens include house dust, molds, feather pillows, animal
dander and pollen.
The
symptoms can flare up with exposure to tobacco smoke, air pollutants,
chemical fumes, drafts, chilling and sudden temperature changes.
